Basic Art current assignment
by William Fritz
"Across the Universe" poster to include L/s Principles and drawing detail. Lettering
All drawing this marking period will either be done in class in the alloted time or assigned as homework in the sketchbook. No late work is acceptable because we will be working daily to build skills. Students will not be marked down for absences but may have to do the work they missed in order to proceed to other assignments.

Project 39 - Students will choose one of their three designs to create a final pencil drawing demonstrating the 7 principles of design and then write a short paper explaining their use of these principles.
Project 38 - Students will use their sketch of a landscape to redign a pencil drawing in three different appearances using the design principles we have discussed in the previous 7 weeks.
Project 37 - Students will select three of their best sketches and then the teacher will narrow it down to one to use to create a mosaic.
Project 36 - Students will design an ATC based on the theme of peace or compassion for others in color. They will scan these to produce their cards for trading.
Project 35 - students will produce a #D drawing using the computer to scan the origional.
Project 34 - Students will create a pop-up based on the winter olympics.
Project 33 - Students will follow a pattern sheet to create a box for their ATC cards produced earlier in the year. They will be required to follow a written set of directions, cut out the box pattern and create a deign that wraps around the box.
Project 32 - Students will use their sketches of cartoon characters, and power/strength words along with a creative background pattern to design a skateboard deck that represents themselves.
Project 31 - students will collect 10 examples of textures by cutting photographs from magazines and gluing them on a sheet of paper. They will then draw each of these examples in pencil attempting to create visual texture.
Project 30 - Students will have a take home drawing exam that is due at the beginning of their written exam testing period.
Project 29 - Students will do a self portrait with eight different color groupings in the style of Andy Warhol.
Project 28 - Students will select a famous face of their choice and convert it to a 5 value painting.
Project 27 - Students will select a theme and create a color wheel with each color being a different drawing based on theme selected.
Project 26 - Students will create a drawing demonstrating value and volume in the style of Henry Moore.
Project 25 - Students will be creating miniature buildings and items for the decoration of the gymnasium for the Winter Concert. These will be large three dimensional Putz Haus with Holiday decoration based on the theme "Winter Nights, Winter Lights"
Project 24 - Students will create a free form drawing in the style of Henry Moore.About Henry Moore
Project 22, and 23 - Students will use ball point pen and markers do to value drawing of simple objects.
Project 21 - Students will do a detailed pencil drawing of simple objects and add shadows and values to meet their 9 value scale.
Project 18, 19 ,and 20 - Students will create a study of three dimensional shapes using the principles of light and shadow from a selected light source.
Project 15, 16 and 17 - Students will create a value charts in three media: pencil, ball point pen, and pen and ink.
Project 14 - Students will biomorphic shapes of leaves to create a visual design that shows movement.
Project 11, 12 ,and 13 - Students will create a repeat pattern in marker using geometric shapes in marker, an alternating repeat pattern in marker using marker, and a radial design using cut paper geometric shapes.
Project 10 - Students will convert the contour drawing to a colored shape design.
Project 9 - Students will do a detailed contour drawing of a still life and then add the 9 values, highlights, and shadows.
Project 8 - Students will draw simple 3D shapes pick a light source and shade to 9 values observing highlights and shadows as well in their drawing.
Projects 5, 6, and 7 - Students will use geometric shapes to create a repeat pattern, an alternating repeat pattern, and a radial design. All projects due October 27.
Project 4 - Students will be given a photo selection of food to use for capturing the tonal shape forms. This will be done as grid drawing to enlarge shape areas. Students will then use cut paper to create a shape design design. Due October 12.
Project 3 - Students will select a wooden toy as their subject and then draw it on 9x12 inch white paper. Using lines they will demonstrate the concepts of invisible lines and gestalt theory. Due October 7.
Project 2- Students will choose a item from nature common to Fall and create a template pattern. This template will be used to develop a design using the concepts of running off and overlapping. The design will be shaded using various qualities of line. Due October 2.
Project 1-We have completed Artist Trading Cards done in line. Deadline was Sept 22.
Line - the first element
LINE
*Line is the simplest of all the art elements.
*line can be defined as
*a point in motion
*a series of adjacent points
*a connection between points
*an implied connection between points
Line Quality
*orientation – refers to a lines position
*horizontal
*vertical
*diagonal
*Diagonal and curving lines are the most dynamic.
They show movement and change
*Horizontal lines are the most stable or static
*Vertical lines have potential to be either dynamic or static
*Direction refers to the implied movement of a line
*Continuity or linear flow can enhance or detract from a lines direction
• continuous lines suggest movement while
• broken lines suggest stopping and starting
Actual Lines – how lines create a drawing or design
*Contour – the outside shape
*gesture - suggest main ideas and movement
*calligraphic line- appear to be beautiful writing
*Organizational lines- used as a plan or map for a drawing
Implied Lines – suggested but not really drawn
*closure creates lines in our brain but not in our eyes
Principles of Design –
I. Unity – defined as similarity, oneness, togetherness, or cohesion
a. Used to create a composition that looks like it is complete
b. Composition – how a picture, drawing or painting is put together
II. Variety – defined as difference
III. Gestalt Theory – we see the whole picture first and the parts later
a. Grouping – putting things together visually
1. We can group by size, location, shape, color, texture. Direction
2. we can group by what is alike (unity) and what is different
(variety)
b. Containment – putting things together by framing them or
enclosing them in
c. Repetition – repeating the same visual element over and over such as a shape, color, texture, line to create a pattern
d. Proximity – how close together visual elements are
1. next to each other – called Fusion – they share edges – creates unity
2. farther apart creating interest – variety
e. Continuity– a fluid connection between elements They seem to
flow together
1. skillful use of continuity can show movement – a visual pathway
2. movement or continuity can lead us to a focal point
f. Closure – the mind’s capability to connect the dots
IV. Patterns and Grids
a. Pattern – a visual element repeated over and over
1. repeated element(shape, color, line value ,or texture) used to create
visual interest
2. can be used to show movement, energy or unity
b. Grid – a serires of intersecting lines
1. used to show containment
2. used to layout design for unity or variety
.3. used most commonly for creating vertical and horizontal to
create visual order
V. Balance
a. Balance – equal distribution of visual elements
b. Weight and Gravity
1. Visual weight – shapes can sink or float
2. Visual weight – relative importance
c. Symmetrical balance – shapes are mirrored ( the same on each side)
1. vertical – up and dowm
2. horizontal – top and bottom
d. Radial Balance – from the center out to the edges
e. Asymmetrical balance – items are not mirrored but visually
1. size
2. shape
3. position
e. Imbalance – deliberately causing elements to be in conflict
VI. Scale and Proportion
a. Scale – a comparison of size – example in relation to a real car a scale of 1/12 means that the car is smaller by 1?12 a 12 fot car would be only 1 foot long
b. Proportion – relative size – example the human body is approximately 7 ½ human heads tall. The waist is four heads higher than the feet
VII. Rhythm _ when elements are used in multiple units to create deliberate
Patterns
a. color, shape, or line are most common
c. Value and texture are also used
VIII. Emphasis
a. emphasis is the most prominent visual element
b. focal point – the item that first draws your attention in a composition
(drawing or painting)
c. Placement – where the focal point is located
1. centered – in the visual center
2. eccentric – not in the center, off center
d. contrast- differing qualities examples- large/small, dark/light, curved/angular, horizontal/ vertical
IX. Creating the illusion of Space
a. Linear perspective
c. atmospheric perspective
d. Layering
e. fracturing
