About Me
by Adam Dorland
Hello everyone, My Name is Mr. Adam T. Dorland and I am a sixth year physical educator here in wonderful Carsonville-Port Sanilac. I am a graduate of Central Michigan University where I majored in Physical Education and minored in Health Education, both of which I feel passionate about. I am the oldest of four children in my family and participated in three sports in high school; football, wrestling and track. I love sports myself and love to exercise as well! In my free time I enjoy my wife Stacey, my son Preston, my dog Trucker, driving milk truck, and being on the Port Sanilac Fire Department. I coach jr. high football, 8th grade boys basketball, 5th and 6th grade boys basketball, and varsity boys track.
When it comes to physical education, I believe it plays a distinctive and all-encompassing role in education. Physical education contributes to the lifelong development of the whole person: physical, social, and emotional. The purpose of physical education is to develop, in all students, the skills, knowledge, and attitudes for creating and maintaining physical, emotional, and social well being in an ever changing society. I believe that physical education needs to be present in every student’s school day, from the first day of kindergarten, to the day before everyone graduates because each of them has a long life to live and hopefully they will take what I give them in class and apply it to their everyday lives after graduation. This will hopefully reduce the risk of disease and obesity in my students and people my students are affiliated with. I believe that physical education should enhance their fitness and well being as well as to teach and refine their fundamental motor skills. I also believe that physical education should share the same goals as academic education; self direction, self esteem, and cooperative behavior. Even more importantly, physical education should be satisfying and enjoyable for every one, every day that participate in physical activity. In the end, I believe that physical education should be viewed as a tool to help one live a long and healthy life. I expect students to do everything we do in class to the best of their ability and we will work hard and practice like champions. Like my favorite saying goes, “Not only does practice make perfect but perfect practice makes you even better.”
In this year’s P.E. class, I have many goals. I want P.E. to be fun and exciting as we all work hard. I expect our classroom to be well organized and an environment full of hard work and success. I also expect P.E. to be learned and taught throughout the curriculum. Literacy will be taught in my P.E. class. We will read many up to date articles, write about what we learn, listen to one another, and overall, have fun with P.E. both in and out of the classroom. I do not believe in standard homework since it promotes everything that I am not wanting from my students; sitting and not being active. Instead, I might ask students to do something physical in which you can verify that they did what I asked and sign their journal. Finally, I will run a classroom with a good management strategy. We will use procedures and routines throughout our days together and use a well constructed and tightly followed discipline plan that allows for the most effective learning as possible.
In closing, if you ever have any questions you could reach with phone by calling 810-657-9394 @ ext. 204 or 153 or by email at adorland@carsport.k12.mi.us. I will check both everyday with the intent to keep an open communication line between the classroom and the home front for the students. I am always open for questions or comments and do not hesitate to contact. Thank you for your time and effort! Once again, thanks for allowing me to teach, coach and live in your wonderful district!
