Welcome to the homepage of Mr. Thurston,

Grades 4-6 Social Studies.

As the images suggest, Social Studies is very important to me.  By learning about the past, we can build upon those successes for the future of our great nation!

Grade 4 will be learning about 5 Major US Geographic Regions plus Michigan History after statehood (1837).  Introductions to Economics and Civics are also included.

Grade 5 studies United States History from Native American times to approx. the War of 1812.

Grade 6 preps first for the fall MEAP Social Studies test (held in early October), then studies Geography of North and South America.  European Geography follows, plus reviews of Economics and Government.

Our Readers are in Reading Workshops, working to improve by leaps and bounds our reading ability.  Readers also are taking Accelerated Reading quizzes to improve their reading lives!

**LATE WORK in my room is automatically docked 10% off the final score unless the student was absent on the day we assigned the work, or prior arrangement with the teacher has been made.  The second week =20% off, week three and later work is 30% off the assignment's final value.

This year, your student will receive all five core subjects in different rooms.  Each teacher is specializing their instruction with the end result of your student benefitting from consistency of instruction.  The areas include Mr. Binder teaching Everyday Mathematics, Mrs. Campbell teaching Reading/Spelling, Miss Cross leading ELA instruction, Mr. Tanton teaching Science, and myself teaching Social Studies.

CPS Elementary will host three Accelerated Reader contests through out this school year, so I encourage my students to READ, READ, READ!!  My motto is Read Every Day.
