D. Eight Man Football
The Board of Education reviewed
the Varsity Football schedule for next fall. The schedule is complete, with a
full 9 game scheduled for each team. Within those 9 games, a 5 team conference
is being considered by the Athletic Directors.
The most important part of the
discussion centered on plans for the opening game on Saturday, August 29th in
Engadine, which is located in the Upper Peninsula. At this time, the Varsity
Football Team, the band and cheerleaders are all making their plans for the
trip. We are still working with Engadine to provide a JV game which would be
played on Friday, August 28th at 4:30 p.m. The Varsity Game will be played at
7:00 p.m. on Saturday the 29th of August, because this will allow the entire
Eastern half of the Upper Peninsula to come to the game and observe the FIRST
Eight Man Football contest to be played in Upper Peninsula History. A majority
of the small schools in the Upper Peninsula will be playing eight man football
the following year. This will be a very special, once in a lifetime experience
for our athletes.
Carsonville – Port Sanilac was
the first school in the State of Michigan to declare the starting of a new
direction in football. When the decision to form an eight man football team was
made in November of 2008, we had no opponents on the horizon. Now we have a
complete schedule for both JV & Varsity. The Michigan High School Athletic
Association is planning for 30-60 schools to be active in 8 man football in
2010-11 and a state championship will be held.
Prior to 1944, Carsonville High
School played less than 11 man football for a 5 year period. At our first home
game on Friday, September 4th against Owen-Gage, we would like to honor the
players from that era. Please call the Superintendent’s Office at 810-657-9393
with any information that would help us locate these individuals, so we can
personally provide for them at that game
The entire trip to Engadine
will be privately funded. The Board of Education has directed Mr. Titus to
coordinate all Engadine Trip Fundraisers.
E. ARRA Report
Margie Christenbery reported on
the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funds. The district
will receive funds from the stabilization fund to help offset the upcoming
state aid reduction. The district will have to demonstrate through
reporting (details not finalized) that the funds have been used to meet
the objectives of the grant. We have also coordinated with the
Intermediate School District to complete the ARRA-Special
Education Stabilization Funds Application.
