K. Eight Man Football Report
The Board of Education reviewed the
Varsity Football schedule for next fall. There are seven games on the schedule
and two more games revolving around a playoff schedule that will be completed
very soon.
The most important part of the
discussion centered on the opening game on Saturday, August 29th in
Engadine, which is located in the Upper Peninsula.
All of the travel plans and exact
times are not completed, however the games are scheduled. The Junior Varsity
Team will play Friday, August 28th at 4:30 p.m. The Varsity Game
will be played at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday the 29th of August, because
this will allow the entire Eastern half of the Upper Peninsula to come to the
game and observe the FIRST Eight Man Football contest to be played in Upper
Peninsula History. A majority of the small schools in the Upper Peninsula will
be playing eight man football the following year.
Our JV and Varsity teams will travel
to the Engadine Area and camp out for at least Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
The Engadine Athletic Boosters will feed our teams on Friday and Saturday. This
will be a very special, once in a lifetime experience for our athletes who will
become the foundation of a new era in football at CPS and across the State.
In the fall of 1936, Newaygo High
School played a number of 8-player football games at the request of the MHSAA.
The request was a response to growing interest in 6 and 8-player football in
the state of Michigan, especially among smaller schools. The coaches and administrators responded
favorably to the games indicating they liked eight-man football game as well or
better than the eleven-man game for a number of reasons.
·
Play was more open and exciting to
watch.
·
Chance of injury was decreased because
the game tended to have fewer plays on which players “piled up.”
·
Expenses for equipment and
transportation were lessened
·
Addressed squad size and matching
issues in smaller schools (i.e., with limited numbers in small schools,
underclassmen are required to play with upperclassmen and, “some small boys are
pitted against boys much too old and too heavy for them.”)
Carsonville – Port Sanilac was the
first to declare the starting of a new direction in football. At that time in
November of 2008, we had no opponents on the horizon, but now we have a
complete schedule for both JV & Varsity and the Michigan High School
Athletic Association is planning for 30-60 schools to be active in 8 man
football in 2010-11 and a state championship will be held.
The entire
trip to Engadine will be privately funded.
L. Superintendent Evaluation
Each member of the Board received a
Superintendent Evaluation Form to be returned to Board President, Mary Anne
Magri by May 29th. Ms. Magri will then put together a summary evaluation
and meet with the Superintendent. A completed report should be ready for the
June 2009 meeting.
M. Closed Session
BOARD
ACTION: Motion By: C. Knaggs Supported By: L. Blasius
Passed: By unanimous vote that the Board of
Education adjourn to closed session at 9:22 p.m. for the purpose of
